14th African Reinsurance Forum Feedback
This year’s Reinsurance Forum was held in Tunis, Tunisia from 19th to 21st October, 2008. In line with the decision of the General Assembly in Algiers in May, 2008, the Forum started with an Overview of Global Trends in Reinsurance by a panel of discussants. The international reinsurer’s perspective was presented by Mr. Thomas Hess, Head Economic Research & Consulting, Swiss Re, Zurich. The regional reinsurer’s perspective was presented by Mr. Ridha Karray, General Manager of Best Re while the reinsurance broker’s view was given by Mr. Johnnie Wilcox, Managing Director, UAIB, Lagos.
The morning session of Day 2 of the Forum was devoted to discussion on Agricultural insurance. Two papers were presented:
- “Traditional Insurance” by Mr. Mansour Nasri, General Manager of Caisse Tunisienne d’Assurances Mutuelles Agricoles and “Mutuelle Générale d’Assurances”
- “Effect of Climate on Agricultural Insurance” by Mr.Frank Okry Novignon, Actuary, CICA Re, Lome
The Forum was attended by 359 participants, a much higher number than was recorded in the last two years: 207 in 2006 and 135 in 2007. An analysis of the participants revealed the following representation:
- 73 Ceding companies
- 41 Reinsurance companies
- 34 Broking firms
